The program of mechanical engineering is aims to prepare and provide the workforce in technology development for different sectors of industry, power generation, central air conditioning systems, automotive maintenance, renewable energy, and plumbing systems (supply of clean water to facilities and removal of waste water). The program has 136 credit hours, which can be divided into four categories as general university requirements, college requirements, program requirements, and program electives.
The general university requirements of the program primarily concentrate on the education for national integrity. The college requirements help the students to become knowledgeable in technical communication in English, calculus branch of mathematics, economics, starting a private business, college physics, chemistry, computer programing, and the importance of engineering in our life. The program electives requirements focus on specific topics in the program. A number of elective courses are available for the students in order to gain extended knowledge or skills in their favored topic
The program gives students an opportunity to specialize after graduation in a wide range of areas such as air conditioning, refrigeration, power plants (industrial stations to generate electricity for cities), vibration analysis, manufacturing, and control systems. Before graduation, each student must complete a graduation project (typically as a member in a group), where a major design or investigative study is performed. The students may also build a system or a component during their project. Guidance is provided to students during the project period (one semester), and a project supervisor is assigned to each project. The students write a report to document their work and also present it in front of a judging team.
Graduates from the Mechanical Engineering program may start their career path at public or private organizations, such as local municipalities, Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Transport and Communication, Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources, Engineering Divisions in other ministries, Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), Oman Oil Refineries and Petroleum Industries Company (ORPIC), Oman Airport Management Company, power plants, engineering services companies, oil and gas companies, automobile repair agencies, airports with airplane repair facilities, construction companies, energy solutions companies, iron and steel factories, aluminum plants, and smelters (industrial facilities to extract metals from its raw materials). Students who prefer independency and enjoy self-success may start their own business.
In terms of the field of work, it can be automatic fire protection systems, plumbing (supply of clean water to facilities and removal of waste water), manufacturing, automotive industry (cars and trucks), renewable energy, sales of mechanical equipment, air conditioning, heating, ventilation, welding inspection, planning for an industrial organization, and supervision of young engineers or technicians.
